Welcome back to our Advent Christmas Countdown when at this time in the Liturgical year we express our longing for a redeemer — for this is a period of preparation and repentance. Today, we’ll learn the 3rd great “O Antiphon”, c.f. Isaiah 53 verse 2:

“And he shall grow up as a tender plant before him, and as a root out of a thirsty ground: there is no beauty in him, nor comeliness: and we have seen him, and there was no sightliness, that we should be desirous of him” (c.f. Douay-Rheims Bible).

"O Radix Jesse, qui stas in signum populórum, super quem continébunt reges os suum, quem gentes deprescabúntur: veni ad liberándum nos, jam noli tardáre."

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION AS WE JOURNEY TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

In the coming days, 3 visitors to the Rosary Hour Podcast will help Amelia with the Christmas Countdown in anticipation of this year’s Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Our guests this week include…

  • Fr. Elias Mary Mills, FI (USA)

  • Fr. Thaddaeus Lancton, MIC (USA) and

  • Fr. Anthony Gramlich, MIC (USA)

.. who will help us to reflect on Our Lady 170 years after the proclamation of the dogma in “Ineffabilis Deus” the doctrine that was revealed by God about the nature of the Blessed Mother.

See Fr. Anthony’s latest video from yesterday, posted to the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy YouTube Channel:

FR. ANTHONY PROVIDES A RECAP of the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. He also reminds us to 'live the Spirit of Advent' with a summary of the various aspects of Advent, and hinting at the Secret of Christmas Joy which he'll discuss in an upcoming episode.

The Catholic Church’s teaching regarding Our Lady:

  • 1. She is the Mother of God;

  • 2. She is conceived & gave birth miraculously; virgin most pure.

  • 3. She was assumed (she was taken up into Heaven) both body & soul;

  • 4. She was conceived without original sin: immaculate.

The “Immaculate Conception” is celebrated December 8 — and in 1854, Pope Pius IX in his papal bull “Ineffabilis Deus” declared that Mary was conceived without the stain of Sin.

LEARN THE “O ANTIPHON” FOR DECEMBER 19th

LISTEN TO the next great “O Antiphon” with the MAGNIFICAT prayed in LATIN below:

(PLAINSONG: Please see the score below)

Antiphon:

“O Radix Jesse” is to be sung on December 19:

Today, after listening to Fr. Elias and Fr. Thad (who join Amelia to explore the Immaculate Conception prior to First Saturday in this segment of the Consecration Journey), we also invite listeners to LEARN the next great “O ANTIPHON” (for DECEMBER 19th in LATIN and ENGLISH for DAY 3 of 7 in the "KNOWLEDGE OF SELF" portion) prior to praying the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.

Note that where there is no “hard and fast rule” to what mysteries to pray in December, Fr. Thaddaeus says it is okay to pray only the Joyful Mysteries, or to simply pray these Joyful Mysteries during the Octave of Christmas from December 24 to January 1. Children participating in this Consecration journey might enjoy only praying the 3rd Joyful Mystery until Christmas day.

  • By knowing the "seven magnificent Messianic titles", based on the Old Testament prophecies, we recall as the Mystical Body the limits of humanity before the coming of the Redeemer".

On December 19, the 3rd Day of the Christmas Novena focus is "O Root of Jesse" which is also sung in the hymn "O Come, O Come Emmanuel"

  • Veni o Jesse virgula! Ex hostis tuos ungula, De specu tuos tartari Educ, et antro barathri. [3rd antiphon]

Douay-Rheims Bible
”And he shall grow up as a tender plant before him, and as a root out of a thirsty ground: there is no beauty in him, nor comeliness: and we have seen him, and there was no sightliness, that we should be desirous of him.” (Is. 53:2)

PRAY THE ROSARY EVERY DAY:

  • We invite you to pray 5 decades of the Rosary — the Joyful Mysteries. Feel free to use the following link for prayer cards, which we’ll record soon with Fr. Elias, Fr. Thad, and Fr. Anthony:

PSALMODY FOR NIGHT PRAYER3

Antiphon: Have mercy, Lord, and hear my prayer.

Psalm 4: Thanksgiving

The resurrection of Christ was God’s supreme and wholly marvelous work (Saint Augustine).

When I call, answer me, O God of justice; *
from anguish you released me, have mercy and hear me!

O men, how long will your hearts be closed, *

will you love what is futile and seek what is false?

It is the Lord who grants favors to those whom he loves; *

the Lord hears me whenever I call him.

Fear him; do not sin: ponder on your bed and be still. *

Make justice your sacrifice, and trust in the Lord.

“What can bring us happiness?” many say. *

Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord.

You have put into my heart a greater joy *

than they have from abundance of corn and new wine.

I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once *

for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *

and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *

ad will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon: Have mercy, Lord, and hear my prayer.

2nd ANTIPHON

In the silent hours of night, bless the Lord.

Psalm 134: Evening prayer in the temple

Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great (Revelation 19:5).

O come, bless the Lord, *
all you who serve the Lord,
who stand in the house of the Lord, *

in the courts of the house of our God.

Lift up your hands to the holy place *

and bless the Lord through the night.

May the Lord bless you from Zion, *

he who made both heaven and earth.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *

and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *

and will be for ever. Amen.

ANTIPHON:

In the silent hours of night, bless the Lord.

READING: from the book of Deuteronomy 6:4-7

”Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today. Drill them into your children. Speak of them at home and abroad, whether you are busy or at rest.”

RESPONSORY

Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

— Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

You have redeemed us, Lord God of truth.

— I commend my spirit.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

— Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

GOSPEL CANTICLE

Antiphon:

Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake, we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace.

Canticle of Simeon
Luke 2:29-32
Christ is the light of the nations and the glory of Israel

Lord, + now you let your servant go in peace; *

your word has been fulfilled:

my own eyes have seen the salvation *

which you have prepared in the sight of every people:

a light to reveal you to the nations *

and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *

and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon:

Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake, we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace.

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Let us pray.

Lord, we beg you to visit this house
and banish from it all the deadly power of the enemy.
May your holy angels dwell here to keep us in peace,
and may your blessing be upon us always.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
— Amen.

BLESSING

May the all-powerful Lord
grant us a restful night
and a peaceful death.
— Amen.

Antiphon or song in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Loving mother of the Redeemer,
gate of heaven, star of the sea,
assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.
To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,
yet remained a virgin after as before.
You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,
have pity on us poor sinners.

Or:

Alma Redemptóris Mater, quæ pérvia cæli
porta manes, et stella maris, succúrre cadénti,
súrgere qui curat, pópulo: tu quæ genuísti,
natúra miránte, tuum sanctum Genitórem,
Virgo prius ac postérius, Gabriélis ab ore
sumens illud Ave, peccatórum miserére.

Additional Reading: O ROOT OF JESSE

Isaiah 11:1-12

Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition

11 And there shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse, and a flower shall rise up out of his root.

2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the spirit of counsel, and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of godliness.

3 And he shall be filled with the spirit of the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge according to the sight of the eyes, nor reprove according to the hearing of the ears.

4 But he shall judge the poor with justice, and shall reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: land he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked.

5 And justice shall be the girdle of his loins: and faith the girdle of his reins.

6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb: and the leopard shall lie down with the kid: the calf and the lion, and the sheep shall abide together, and a little child shall lead them.

7 The calf and the bear shall feed: their young ones shall rest together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp: and the weaned child shall thrust his hand into the den of the basilisk.

9 They shall not hurt, nor shall they kill in all my holy mountain, for the earth is filled with the knowledge of the Lord, as the covering waters of the sea.

10 In that day the root of Jesse, who standeth for an ensign of the people, him the Gentiles shall beseech, and his sepulchre shall be glorious.

11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand the second time to possess the remnant of his people, which shall be left from the Assyrians, and from Egypt, and from Phetros, and from Ethiopia, and from Elam, and from Sennaar, and from Emath, and from the islands of the sea.

12 And he shall set up a standard unto the nations, and shall assemble the fugitives of Israel, and shall gather together the dispersed of Juda from the four quarters of the earth.

ENGLISH VERSION

ANTIPHON: “And he shall grow up as a tender plant before him, and as a root out of a thirsty ground: there is no beauty in him, nor comeliness: and we have seen him, and there was no sightliness, that we should be desirous of him”

THE MAGNIFICAT:
My soul doth magnify the Lord.
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
Because He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid:
For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Because He that is mighty hath done great things to me; and holy is His name.
And His mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear Him.
He hath shown might in His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.
He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich He hath sent empty away.
He hath received Israel His servant, being mindful of His mercy:
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His seed for ever.
Glory be the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forever and ever, Amen.

ANTIPHON: “And he shall grow up as a tender plant before him, and as a root out of a thirsty ground: there is no beauty in him, nor comeliness: and we have seen him, and there was no sightliness, that we should be desirous of him”

V. O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

LET US PRAY: O Lord, we beseech thee, mercifully incline Thine ears unto our prayers, and lighten the darkness of our minds by the grace of Thy heavenly visitation. Who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.
R. Amen
