DECADE PRAYERS (See Card for November)

  • The following summary describes how the Rosary is prayed in the city where Beata Alexandrina was catechized and where she received her first Holy Communion. This is the Rosary culture that she would have known and which was inherited by Padre Nuno and his parish communities on the Atlantic Coast of Portugal.

SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR - ST. FRANCIS DE SALES:

“At each decade think of one of the mysteries of the Rosary according to your leisure, remembering it principally when pronouncing the holy names of Jesus and Mary, with great reverence of heart and body.

If any other sentiment should animate you (sorrow for past sin or a purpose of amendment) meditate thereon throughout the chaplet (Rosary) as well as you can, recalling this sentiment or any other that God may inspire in a special manner when murmuring the sacred names of Jesus and Mary.”

5. Announce the First Mystery

The First Sorrowful Mystery:
- Jesus’ Agony in the Garden

"Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Sit here, while I go yonder and pray.' And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, 'My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.' And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, 'My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will"' (Mt 26:36-39).

We offer you, Lord Jesus, this decade in honor of your mortal agony in the Garden of Olives; and we ask you, through this mystery and through the intercession of your Most Holy Mother, for true contrition for our sins. So may it be.

Next, say the Our Father (2).

LEADER: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

ALL: Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

6. On the Ten Small Beads of Each Decade of the Rosary

LEADER: Ten Hail Marys (10), while meditating on the Mystery.

Hail, Mary, full of grace,  the Lord is with thee.  Blessed art thou among women,  and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

ALL: Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.

7. Glory be to the Father

LEADER: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

ALL: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

8. Miraculous Medal Prayer

LEADER: O Mary conceived without sin;

ALL:  Pray for us, who have recourse to thee.3

9. Fatima Prayer

LEADER:   O my Jesus, forgive our sins and deliver us from the fires of Hell.

ALL: Take all souls to Heaven, especially in most need of thy mercy.

10. Intentions

LEADER: OUR LADY of FATIMA of the most holy Rosary

ALL:  Save us and save the people of the world.

OPTIONAL — LEADER: O Glorious St. Joseph

ALL: Pray for us

OPTIONAL — LEADER: St. Michael the Archangel

ALL: Pray for us

11. “DE PROFUNDIS” (For the Month of November)

LEADER: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,

ALL:  and let perpetual light shine upon them.

LEADER: May they all rest in peace.

ALL:  Amen.

12. Announce the Second Mystery

The Second Sorrowful Mystery: The scourging at the pillar.

"Pilate released Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified" (Mt 27,26).4

We offer you, Lord Jesus, this decade, in honor of your bloody flagellation; and we ask you, through this mystery and through the intercession of your most holy Mother, for the mortification of our senses. So it may be.

Next say the Our Father:

LEADER: Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

ALL: Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.

Repeat 6 and 7 and continue with the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Mysteries in the same manner.

13. Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope, to thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears; turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

CONCLUDING PRAYERS

  • Let us Pray, O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant, we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

14. Pendant Conclusion by St. Francis de Sales

Since Friday is a day of penance, we don’t eat meat or we give something up today, for to save souls, Jesus told St. Faustina, a sacrifice must be made.

As an idea, take an extra moment to learn with St. Francis de Sales and how he prayed the ending of the Rosary when you can recite 3 Hail Marys for the intentions of the Holy Father, the Pope as was the tradition left by St. Jacinta:

  • "On the large bead at the end of the last decade, thank God for having been permitted to recite your chaplet.”

RHP: “Dear God, thank you for granting me this day so I might recite the Holy Rosary and give praise to you.”

  • “Passing to the three following small beads, salute the most holy Virgin Mary, entreating her

    • at the first to offer your understanding to the Eternal Father that you may continually consider His mercies”

      • “O Mary Conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”

      • “Hail Mary Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

    • “at the second, supplicate her to offer your memory to the Son that your thoughts may constantly turn to His Passion and Death”

Amen.”

    • “at the third, implore her to offer your will to the Holy Ghost that it may ever be inflamed with His holy love”

Amen.”

  • “On the [final] large bead at the end, beg the divine Majesty to accept all for His glory and the good of His Church, asking Him to keep you ever in its pale and to bring back those who have wandered; pray for your friends, and conclude as you commenced by the profession of faith, the Creed and Sign of the Cross.”

14. RECITE THE “DE PROFUNDIS”

Leader:

“May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.”

ALL: Amen

15. Conclude by Making the Sign of the Cross

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
